Diagnostic Services

Radiography

Radiographs (X-rays) are extremely helpful for diagnosing and monitoring many medical and surgical conditions. X-rays are useful in examining your pet’s bones, lungs, heart, abdomen, oral cavity and other areas of the body. An X-ray can spot a fractured bone, detect tumors, help with the diagnosis of heartworm disease or locate an obstruction or foreign body(toys, bones, etc.) in your pet’s intestine or stomach. Radiographs are often one of the first tests performed on your pet as the procedure is painless and can often provide an immediate and conclusive diagnosis.

Animal Health Care Center of Chillicothe utilizes modern X-ray technologies and is up-to-date on the latest radiographic procedures. We also maintain a close relationship with a radiologist for timely second opinions.

Diagnostic Laboratory Testing

When your pet is sick, he or she cannot tell us what is wrong. Animal Health Care Center of Chillicothe’s laboratory provides fast and accurate information critical for diagnosis of a sick or injured pet. With our modern diagnostic laboratory equipment, our patients can receive appropriate treatment immediately upon arriving at our clinic.

Performing preventative medicine as well as diagnosing emergent internal health issues requires the ability to perform a wide range of laboratory tests on blood, urine, feces, and biopsied tissue. Without timely access to precise laboratory test results—blood testing, biopsies, microscopic examinations, bacterial culture sensitivity, and more—it is difficult to make an accurate diagnosis or assessment of your pet’s health.

Our laboratory is capable of processing many different tests, including complete blood counts (CBC), full blood chemistry profiles, thyroid and cholesterol testing, parasite identification to detect the presence of heartworms, roundworms and other internal parasites; bacterial and fungal cultures, and viral screens. We are also able to perform pre-anesthetic blood testing the day of your pet’s anesthetic procedure. The information we obtain from these pre-anesthetic screening tests can greatly reduce the risks associated with anesthesia and surgery.

We also maintain a close collaborative relationship with a laboratory for more complex testing. We generally will receive results within 24 to 72 hours depending on the nature of the test being performed.

Laser Surgery

We offer laser surgery as a modern option for many procedures. A surgical laser uses a focused beam of light to precisely cut tissue while sealing blood vessels and nerve endings at the same time.

This advanced technology typically results in less bleeding, reduced swelling, and improved comfort during recovery compared to traditional surgery. Laser surgery allows for greater precision and supports a smoother healing process for your pet.

Dr. Tharp saw the importance in moving forward with the latest technology and became certified in Advanced Laser Surgery through the Continued Education Certification Program at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Now  Animal Health Care Center of Chillicothe is able to offer laser surgery for a number of soft tissue procedures such as spays and neuters, mass removals and more.

"In recognition of your commitment to provide the highest quality medicine in the Veterinary profession, we are proud to recognize that you are among the Top 20 percent of Veterinary Clinics in the United States offering laser surgery to your clients and their pets. We at Cutting Edge thank you for your support and for your continued Commitment to Excellence within the field of Veterinary Medicine."

    • Less Bleeding

– small blood vessels are sealed by the laser during surgery which speeds up procedure and reduces your pet’s time under anesthesia

  • Less Pain – nerve endings are also sealed as it cuts resulting in less pain for your pet.
  • Less Swelling – laser energy does not tear or bruise tissue because it is just an invisible beam of light touching your pet.
  • More precise – laser can remove unhealthy tissue while minimizing adverse effects to the healthy surrounding tissue
  • Greatly reduces the risk of infection – as the laser removes diseased tissue, it seals the skin and reduces the amount of bacteria present
  • Less postoperative pain – less discomfort for pet following surgery
  • Promotes more rapid healing – pet recovers more quickly and can return to normal activities

Laser surgery is commonly used in soft-tissue surgical procedures. Your veterinarian will be able to tell you if your pet’s procedure can benefit from laser surgery.

Veterinary Dentistry

Dental Care can add years to your pet’s life! Did you know that you can add two to four years to your pet’s life with proper dental care?

Dental hygiene is an important part of your pet’s health and can often be the cause of serious illness. If left untreated, dental problems can lead to larger systemic issues in your pet due to oral bacteria entering the blood stream and damaging the kidneys, heart and liver.

However, dental disease is often overlooked by many pet owners. It is estimated that more than 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats develop tooth and gum disease by the age of three years.

Dental disease and its serious consequences can be avoided by bringing your pet to your veterinarian for regular dental check-ups and teeth cleanings. This is why Animal Health Care Center of Chillicothe offers full dental cleanings as well as a range of dental procedures. Proper dental care includes tooth scaling and polishing, fluoride rinses, and, if necessary, tooth extractions. All of these services are designed to prevent, uncover and treat dental issues before they become a serious health threat.

If your pet exhibits any of the following symptoms, you should schedule a dental examination appointment immediately:

  • Bad breath – one of the first signs of dental disease
  • A yellowish-brown crust of plaque on the teeth near the gum line
  • Red and swollen gums
  • Pain or bleeding when your pet eats or when the mouth or gums are touched
  • Decreased appetite or difficulty eating
  • Loose or missing teeth
